Dances
Irish stepdance can be placed in two categories. Solo stepdances which are danced by a single dancer, and group stepdances which are coordinated with two or more dancers.
Customes
In public performances, dancers wear customes appropriate for the show. The customes are frequently modern interpretations of traditional Irish styles of dress.
Shoes
Some of the footwork of the softshoe dances is echoed in the footwork of Scottish country dancing. The sound of the dance is also made by the shoes which have a metal tap on the heel and toe.
Competitional Structure
An organised stepdance competition is referred to as 'feis' which means 'festival' in Irish. Dance competitions are divided by age and level of expertise. Dancers are scored based on technique, style and other items such as timing, rhythm and sounds in their hard shoe dances.
An annual regional Championship competition is known as 'oireachtas'. Each of the major Irish stepdance organisations host a World Championship, dancers qualify in various ways, typically by scoring well at an oireachtas.

-Riverdance-
Riverdance was an Irish stepdancing entry in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest and contributed to the popularity of Irish stepdance, which that is still considered a significant watershed in Irish culture.
Today there are many opportunities to watch and enjoy Irish step dancing. It is still a regular part of social functions. But you have to go to Ireland, USA or any other European countries that are doing these kind of shows.
